Some of the issues that we are most passionate about are include, but aren't limited to, the amount of domestic violence in NZ and the number of children that die from it, the rape culture that creates violence towards women and then makes it hard to report it, and the state of care for the homeless and mentally unwell.

These are fairly diverse topics yet they all highlight issues of injustice that go on around us everyday as we live in this beautiful country. Unfortunately, not many of us do much about it, and the government policies are supportive only of those who can help themselves.

Funding cuts to essential servies for rape victims, domestic violence victims, and lack of prosecution on many of those cases is unacceptable and needs to change. There also needs to be more effort put in to protecting the weakest of our socities: children, homeless, and mentally unwell. Moves to push the homeless into other areas rather than central cities does nothing to help the issue and only places more stress on those who already need care and protection. The same can be said for the mentally unwell who struggle to get enough funding to live in environments they choose....

Phew, so those are a few of the reasons we walk, would you like to join us?

ABOUT US

Hi there and welcome to our page. Thanks for wanting to get to know more about us! This group is still growing so we can't tell you about everyone invloved but we will do our best to give you the info you are looking for.

This idea was thought up by Christine Welten. One night she was lying in bed and was thinking about the state of New Zealand. The injustice that she saw everyday on the news and on the streets broke her heart but she didn't know what to do about. She was only one person after all! Then the idea struck that maybe others out there felt as passionate about this stuff as she did.

So the next day Christine started talking to friends about walking to raise awareness of the issues of injustice in our country. And A Long Walk was born. The people involved are ordinary, everyday people who are passionate about seeing those that are most at risk in our communities getting the most help and support. And we believe that this starts by us taking a stand, raising awareness and getting the conversation started. What better way to do that than walking the length of the country and getting others talking??
